Bitumen is a by-product of refined petroleum. It is a black, oily
substance that rather than being disposed of, has long been found
ideal for road paving applications in coating the aggregate to provide
a cohesive, stable, bonded surface capable of withstanding the heavy
traffic typical of roads.
Up until now, by
small-scale local refinery companies, non-standard instant refinery
bitumen is
shipped to various areas nearby Buton Island. Their process is simply
carried out by heating the natural asphalt to temperature of about 163ºC
(dehydration process) to separate bitumen. This process tends to
damage the carbon constituents inside bitumen. The sacks containing
Buton Granular Asphalt (local brand name for non-standard instant refinery
bitumen) are shipped via the Port of Kabungka in eastern coast of
Buton Island.
Sino Prosper Indocarbon (SIPINDO)

and regionally.
